FINDING THE RIGHT SCHOOL
FOR MICHAEL OR MARY
Michael is having a less-than-successful experience as an eighth grader in middle school. His standardized testing indicates he has strong ability, but his achievement is consistently lackluster. He is an avid writer, however, and spends most of his energy writing and illustrating science fiction stories. The optional sports program at his school is too competitive for him, so he gets very little physical exercise. His parents fear he is limiting his chances for success in college and a subsequent career. They want to consider an independent secondary school for Michael’s high school years.
How did eduINNOVATIONS help?
In Jean Lamont’s personal interactions with the family, she accomplished the following:
- Reviewed his record (school reports, teachers’ comments, standardized testing, extracurricular activities)
- Met with Michael and his parents to discuss his academic status and interests in order to develop a list of appropriate schools
- Prepared a schedule for the application process, including testing dates
- Coached Michael for successful interviews and advised his parents about school visits
- Previewed Michael’s application, including the essays and supporting materials
- Guided Michael and his parents on a choice of school from those offering admittance
Success!
Following the review of Michael’s academic status and interests, a list of six independent schools was agreed upon – 4 boarding and 2 day. After Michael received some coaching for the interviews, he and his parents visited these schools and selected four to which Michael would apply. Jean previewed Michael’s applications and offered suggestions to strengthen his essays and supporting material. Michael was offered a place at three of the four schools. Jean assisted Michael and his parents in considering his options and making a selection. Michael enrolled in a nearby day/boarding school where the small class size, excellent creative writing program, and award-winning student newspaper called upon his intellect and interests. The required afternoon athletic program offered a number of non-competitive options like ultimate Frisbee and cycling in which Michael participated, gaining new-found physical fitness and additional friends.
